Jenoptik to play major role in North West safety schemes

National Highways is installing Jenoptik average speed cameras at four different locations in the North West region, on the A585, A590, A66 and A663 as part of its ongoing commitment to reduce the number of people harmed on the region’s roads

A detailed safety review along four routes in the North West region highlighted a high percentage of collisions resulting in serious injury and death.

Collisions have involved:

  • speed at all locations
  • vehicles running red lights at some locations

To improve safety and reduce harm to road users, National Highways plan to install average speed enforcement camera technology at various locations along these routes. The cameras will enforce the existing speed limits.

The agency is proposing average speed and traffic light cameras to reduce the number of collisions and the aim of introducing camera technology is to enforce the current speed limit.

Cameras help reduce instances of drivers exceeding the speed limit for the road and running red lights by encouraging driver compliance. This brings safety benefits to all road users.

The four locations covered by the scheme are as follows:

A66 between Dubwath and Cockermouth;
A585 between M55 junction 3 and Windy Harbour;
A663 Broadway, Oldham;
A590 between Brettargh Holt roundabout and Ayside.
