The Member of Parliament for Southend East and Rochford, Bayo Alaba, has warned that delays to vital improvements on the A127 are stifling economic growth and deterring investment in the city as the cash-strapped Government considers their affordability.
Essex Live reports that over a year has passed since Essex County Council submitted a Strategic Outline Case to the Department for Transport, seeking Major Road Network funding for a package of upgrades to the A127.
Despite its strategic importance, the county council is still waiting to hear whether the bid has been successful and the Government has confirmed it is “under review” along with other costly road projects.
The A127 is one of the busiest non-trunk roads in Essex, carrying more than 80,000 vehicles daily-more than some stretches of the M11. It links Southend to London, Basildon, and London Southend Airport, making it a critical route for commuters, freight, and business.
Mr Alaba said:
“Since my election, I’ve met with several companies who’ve said they would bring additional business and jobs to the area if the A127 were improved. I’ll continue working cross-party to ensure our area gets the support it needs.”
If approved, the funding would be used to realign the Fortune of War junction to improve traffic flow and safety, add an eastbound lane between the Halfway House and Dunton junctions, and upgrade walking and cycling routes between Fortune of War and Basildon town centre. Bus stop enhancements are also planned to support sustainable transport.
A spokesperson for Essex County Council said:
“We are currently awaiting a decision from the Department for Transport on the Strategic Outline Case and whether the project has been approved to progress to the next stage.”
