National Highways provides M27 update and confirms speed limit increase date

National Highways has issued a major update on the M27 resurfacing project and has set a date for when the 50mph speed limit is set to be increased to 60mph. Drivers using the M27 are being urged to remain patient as progress continues on the major resurfacing project between junctions 5 and 7, says the Daily Echo. The project will provide a low-noise surface along the M27 between the two junctions.

Richard Scrase, programme delivery manager at National Highways, has provided an update on the works, which aim to improve the long-term durability and safety of one of Hampshire’s busiest motorway stretches.

He said: “We are currently working in the verge on the westbound carriageway undertaking drainage repairs to make sure it will work for the next 40 years.

“We’re also lifting the infrastructure in the verge by 180 millimetres so it will match the new level of the road.”

The next stage of the project will see crews laying new asphalt in lanes one and two by the end of the year. However, Mr Scrase confirmed these lanes will not reopen before Christmas, with traffic changes expected in the new year.

Once drainage and resurfacing are complete, traffic will be realigned to restore three lanes in each direction. Crews will then move into phase four, reinstating the concrete barrier down the centre of the motorway.

A testing phase will follow, lasting several months, to check systems such as overhead signs, speed detection, and stopped-vehicle detection equipment. During this time, the speed limit will rise to 60mph, which is expected to happen by the end of May.

Mr Scrase cautioned that severe weather could still cause delays, though contingencies are in place.

He added that drivers should expect overnight closures at junctions 4, 5 and 7 over the coming months, with further details to be announced closer to the time.
