Ireland’s Network Intelligence and Management System (NIMS) initiative is set to revolutionize the country’s motorway network through a Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) pilot project, in collaboration with Kapsch TrafficCom, reports Europawire.
Integrated into the operational Traffic Management solution since January 2024, C-ITS will provide real-time information to road users, enhancing traffic safety. With the participation of 1,500 members of the public, the pilot project spans the M50 and M1 motorways in Dublin, aiming to deliver crucial notifications about collisions, congestion, and adverse weather conditions directly to drivers through in-vehicle screens. Supported by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) and the Irish Government, this initiative signifies a significant step forward in leveraging advanced communication technology to improve road safety and efficiency, empowering motorists to make informed decisions and mitigate potential hazards.
“The value of this technology is that it empowers motorists to make real time decisions so they can better plan their journey to avoid things like road collisions, broken down vehicles causing obstruction or congestion and ultimately improve road safety for all road users,” said Minister of State with Responsibility for Road Safety Jack Chambers.
