The A477 near Pembroke was closed for over an hour last week following a two-vehicle collision at the exact spot where new traffic lights were due to be switched on the following day.
A spokesperson for Dyfed-Powys Police reported, “Dyfed-Powys Police received a report of a two-vehicle road traffic collision on the A477 near Nash Fingerpost junction at around 5:15pm on 14 August. The road was closed while both vehicles were recovered. It reopened at 6:30pm.”
The crash occurred literally just hours before Traffic Wales completed the installation of the permanent traffic lights, a project that was finished a month ahead of schedule. Despite the early completion, contractors are expected to return to the site next month to finalise the work.
A spokesperson for Traffic Wales told The Pembrokeshire Herald “The permanent lights are now in operation, and traffic management measures have been removed to alleviate congestion during the summer period.
“The remaining works will be finished in September, which will necessitate the reintroduction of traffic management, but only during off-peak hours, specifically from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm.”
The project to install traffic lights at the junction began in May, following a campaign sparked by the tragic death of 29-year-old Ashley Rogers, who was killed at the junction on 13 May 2022.
The Nash Fingerpost junction has been the site of three fatal accidents in the past 12 years, along with numerous other serious incidents. A petition launched after Ashley’s death, demanding safety improvements at the junction, garnered over 10,000 signatures in just over a month.
