A huge new “gigafactory” making batteries for electric vehicles could be built at Coventry Airport.
Multiple reports say the site has been picked by the West Midlands Combined Authority and now Coventry City Council is working with the airport’s owners to submit a planning application for the site to be used for battery manufacturing.
It it is hoped that having the planning application underway will make it more attractive to battery developers with whom authorities are in talks, and also speed up the process once a developer comes on board.
Far more battery capability is needed to deliver the volume required for vehicles in 2030 when fossil fuel-powered vehicle sales are banned in the UK.
The planning application will go in this year with hopes the factory is operation in 2025.
