Road safety concerns addressed in North Devon

Councillors from Devon County Council will meet this week to discuss options to improve road safety along the A361 corridor between Barnstaple and Ilfracombe.

The North Devon Gazette reports that the meeting tomorrow (Wednesday 8 January) will address persistent speeding issues, particularly at the Strand Lane junction, identified as a significant speeding hotspot in North Devon.

The paper says the council’s agenda includes a proposal for the first phase of the A361 Safer Roads Fund scheme. This phase involves the installation of artificial intelligence and speed enforcement cameras along the route, with an estimated budget of £1 million. The primary objective is to mitigate traffic collisions and fatalities in this high-risk area.

The initiative is supported by a £5.04 million grant from the Department for Transport’s Safer Roads Fund. The implementation of AI technology and speed cameras is expected to enhance driver behaviour by reducing incidents related to speeding, distractions, and other hazardous driving practices.
