Traffic safety and enforcement system provider SEA has completed an installation of its Red Light Safety Enforcement System at a railway level crossing in Greenland Mill, Bradford-on-Avon which it says, as the first RLSE installed in Network Rail’s Western region, will help improve road safety and save lives.
SEA’s RLSE is an enforcement system, detecting vehicles failing to stop at level crossings, and is a highly cost-effective means of improving safety for both road and rail users. The visible deterrent encourages drivers to stop at the level crossing when the lights and barriers are activated. If an offence is detected, the system supports a simple and efficient enforcement process by sending evidence to the police for review and action.
The complexity of the Greenland Mill level crossing site, which is located between a tunnel and a bridge on a river embankment, presented several installation challenges. To overcome access and ground issues, SEA worked collaboratively with civil contractors ERH Ltd and O’Neill’s Construction, and main column supplier ALC Ltd to install a patented folding column which was enhanced with a unique root design. This effectively removed risks around the impact of the embankment foundations and the need for road closures to install the system.
In addition, the system’s remote location required a power supply to be sourced from adjacent lampposts. The low power consumption of the RLSE System makes this power source viable.
