Staffordshire residents embrace winter wellbeing with INTO walking and cycling scheme

The INTO Walking and Cycling scheme funded by Active Travel England is helping people stay active, social, and healthy through a variety of free walking and cycling sessions tailored for all abilities.

One of the highlights of the scheme is the ‘Wheel INTO Winter’ sessions, designed to encourage residents to embrace the crisp air and scenic routes while connecting with others.

From group rides to learning to ride an e-bike, the sessions offer a supportive and inclusive environment that’s transforming cold winter mornings into opportunities for fitness and friendship.

Les Mansell, a local participant from Newcastle-under-Lyme, has been involved with the scheme for over a year and speaks passionately about the experience.

Les said: “Myself and my wife started twelve months ago. I have been taking part in the walking sessions on a Monday, cycling on a Wednesday, and now I do the e-bikes on a Thursday. It is brilliant. I also meet for the Friday morning walk too.

“It is so lovely, all of it is. The people who come, they are so friendly. It is a lovely group. The organisers, Vicky, Charlotte, Ant and Emily, are lovely people. We all look forward to these morning sessions, it gets you out of the house, and you get to meet new people, who have now become new friends. It is a great experience.”

Mark Deaville, Staffordshire County Council’s cabinet member for strategic highways, said: “The INTO Walking and Cycling scheme is a fantastic initiative that not only helps people stay active and healthy but also strengthens our local community.

“These free sessions are a brilliant way to enjoy the outdoors, meet new friends, and stay motivated during the colder months. I encourage everyone in Newcastle-under-Lyme to get involved this winter.”

With a packed timetable that includes activities such as Mindful Mondays, WOW Women’s Only Walks, Wheel for Wellbeing, and Saturday social rides, there’s something for everyone, no matter their fitness level.
