Starling urges councils to make smarter investments into smart signal technology

As the industry faces an uncertain outlook on funding after last week’s budget, traffic monitoring solutions provider Starling Technologies is urging authorities to make best use of already allocated funds, saying it’s more important than ever.

Starling is pointing to the Department for Transport’s £20 million Green Light Fund to local authorities, intended to provide smarter traffic lights, encouraging awarded authorities to tune up traffic signals, better reflect current traffic conditions and get traffic flowing.

“If your authority has been allocated green light funding, do your current plans truly future proof your signalling technology for years to come?,” asks CEO Andrew Calaya Chetty. “There’s an opportunity under this scheme to make funds go further and, rather than simply upgrading old technology, invest in a platform that meets the requirements you’re not even aware of yet.”

He points to three levels at which he believes authorities can upgrade your traffic signal technology today:

1: Existing Signal Upgrade
Replace in-highway detection, with over-ground sensors that are more reliable, provide better data and are simple to maintain with easy access, remote troubleshooting and anytime upgrades.

2: Intelligent Signal Upgrade
Detect all types of road vehicle, mode of travel and pedestrian, as well as multi-zone categorisation across a wide field of vision. Use an intelligent dashboard to capture these data analytics, providing insights to inform signaling decisions.

3: Future-Proof Signal Upgrade
Enhance insights with AI driven, behavioral analysis on vehicles, pedestrians and junction zones, actioning dynamic instruction to the signal controller in real-time.

“While there are many providers of intelligent signalling technology able to offer upgrade 1 and 2, Starling Technologies is the only solution that can also equip local authorities with the real-time actionable insights outlined in upgrade 3,” Mr Calaya Chetty adds. “Today that might involve the prioritisation of buses or vulnerable pedestrians through a crossing, tomorrow who knows. Recently approved as an official supplier under the Government’s G-Cloud 14 framework, Starling Technologies offers an easy procurement route for local authorities.”
