Nearly 60 resurfacing schemes have been completed so far this year across the city of Nottingham.

In 2021, the council successfully bid as part of a competitive process for £18 million from the Government’s Levelling Up fund to improve streets and local town centres and make walking and cycling easier and safer. The largest chunk of this money (£11 million) is for the Streets for People programme.

The funding has been split between each ward, with areas most in need getting more funding. The works have been identified by local people and prioritised by ward councillors and are due to be completed by March 2024.

Across all twenty wards pavements and walkways are being upgraded to make them safer, especially taking into consideration the needs of older people and those with less mobility. Roads and cycle paths are also being repaired to help improve traffic flow and safety. Trees are being planted to make neighbourhoods nicer.

Local signage and leaflets will be used to update residents on upcoming works near them, and the team has begun asking residents for their feedback via an online survey.

Nottingham City Council’s Portfolio Holder for Highways, Transport and Parks, Councillor Audra Wynter, said: “It’s great to see work progressing on this ambitious project to improve our neighbourhoods. This work on our local streets will make it easier and safer to choose walking and cycling for short trips, improve air quality, and reduce carbon emissions from transport.”
