When the Coronavirus restrictions were introduced and passenger numbers on London’s tubes and buses plummeted last year, Transport for London increased the congestion charge price and hours of operation. A year later, they’re looking to keep some changes long term.

Last June, operational hours of the charge were extended to include evenings and weekends, and the charge was increased from £11.50 to £15.

Now TfL is opening a consultation on the future operation of the Congestion Charge, proposing to get rid of charges in the evenings but to keep the £15 price and to charge between midday and 6pm at weekends.

TfL says it a statement that “these changes will support London’s culture, hospitality and night-time businesses and also ensure gains made in reducing car dependency over more than 15 years are not lost and the capital’s recovery from the pandemic is a green and sustainable one”.

Other proposals include, no charge between Christmas Day and New Year’s Day inclusive, the charge to be in operation on bank holidays from midday till 6pm and being able to pay up to three days after travel.
