VolkerHighways completes Horsefair Tunnel lighting scheme

Working in partnership with the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, VolkerHighways has
completed a major street lighting upgrade scheme along the 80-metre-long dual
carriageway Horsefair Tunnel.

The project, which was completed two weeks ahead of schedule, has involved removing the
existing aged lighting and replacing with LED future-proofed lighting, with a 40-year life
expectancy.

Following structural inspections carried out in October, it was determined that a full retrofit
and redesign was required. Under a single-lane directional closure, carried out across 35
nights, the scheme involved the removal of all 260 existing lanterns and the installation of 19
269W and 21 69W LEDs.

It is expected that switching to LEDs can reduce energy consumption by around 65%. This is
supported by the chosen 69W lighting which will be used during darkness and 269W during
daytime.

The scheme has required a high-level of expertise due to its complexity. As principal
contractor, VolkerHighways worked closely with specialist lighting contractors, under a large
diversion route, keeping traffic flowing throughout.

Efficiency savings were achieved for the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames by utilising the traffic
management set-up to undertake additional works outside the original scope, including bridge
expansion and cable repair works.

Commenting on the scheme, David Easton, Operations Director for VolkerHighways, said:
“Horsefair Tunnel lighting improvement scheme was many years in the making due to its
complexity required to enable its success. We are proud to have completed this project to a
high-quality and ahead of schedule, while providing efficiency savings for our valued client.
Thank you to all stakeholders involved in securing its success.”
