WJ celebrate A14 award

WJ Group, the A14 Integrated Delivery Team and Highways England have won an award for their 21-mile A14 Cambridge to Huntingdon enhancement scheme was the largest road building project in Britain, totalling £1.5billion, and was the first major project to be recognised as an ‘Ultra Site’ under a new initiative by the Considerate Constructer Scheme.

WJ were tasked with delivering over £2million of specialist temporary and permanent road markings as part of the required markings, which included 121,000m of their flagship Weatherline Plus, a high performance, dotted profile road marking that provides enhanced visibility, particularly in wet weather conditions.

Another major triumph for the A14 project was the successful completion of the scheme 8 months early, despite a large portion taking place throughout the COVID-19 pandemic with WJ delivering approximately £1million of road marking and studs during this period. WJ deployed several innovative product and equipment solutions that significantly increased efficiency over traditional methods, which was highlighted during the awards ceremony as one of the factors that contributed to the success of the submission.

The Road Marking of the Year award, won at the recent virtual Highways Awards, capped a successful night for Highways England and the A14 Integrated Delivery Team as they also won the Major Project Award and the coveted Judges Special Merit Award.

WJ Group Managing Director Wayne Johnston commented “We’re absolutely thrilled to win this award, which highlighted collaborative working at its best. The contract was carried out during a challenging period, but we were able to demonstrate our unrivalled ability to deliver major road marking schemes and I’m glad we could contribute to the overall success of the project.”

Mark Berg, A14 Integrated Delivery Team Project Director, stated “Road markings have proved to be a vital element in delivering Highways England and A14 IDT imperatives and meeting the standards demanded of an Ultra Site. WJ’s collaborative way of working, combined with their forward-thinking approach, excellent safety standards and exceptional delivery have added real value to the project. If you couple this with their innovative ways of working and consistent high performance, road markings have been at the forefront of what makes the A14 a Special Project and they have made a real contribution towards the overall success of the scheme.”
