£1.5 million safety scheme for busy A663 Broadway in Greater Manchester

Safety along a key route helping to link the M62 and M60 motorways in Greater Manchester is to be improved in a £1.5 million project starting in the new year.

The A663 Broadway at Chadderton near Oldham is sharing in a £9 million investment in road safety projects across the North West. National Highways is delivering the improvement along its three-mile section of the A663 Broadway between Moston Lane East, close to junction 21 of the M60, and the start of the A627(M).

National Highways project manager Vikas Baloch said: “We routinely assess the performance of our motorways and major A roads to ensure they are operating as safely and as smoothly as possible – and we’re always exploring ways to improve safety on our roads and to listen to local communities

“Using collision data and risk assessments we’ve identified sections of Broadway which we think will benefit from measures to slow down drivers and ensure they stick to existing speed limits – for their own safety and the safety of all road users including local residents.”

Collisions on this route have involved excessive speed as well as vehicles running traffic lights on red so a combination of average speed cameras and red light enforcement cameras are being installed at 11 locations. Associated signage will also be erected.

To minimise disruption to road users all the work will be done overnight – usually between 8pm and 6am.  No start date for the work has been confirmed but the project is expected to begin in January and take around three months.

The work is being backed by Transport for Greater Manchester.

Peter Boulton, TfGM’s Network Director for Highways, said: “Any death or serious injury on Greater Manchester’s roads is one too many, and we know all too well that speeding is one of the leading causes of fatal road collisions which have a devastating impact on people’s lives.

“No one should ever come to serious harm while using the roads, and that is why Greater Manchester has now adopted Vision Zero and is committed to ending all road deaths and life changing injuries in the region.

“Investing in our highway infrastructure, particularly in our safety camera network, is one of our main Vision Zero priorities and is vital for us in realising our ambitions, so I welcome the work being carried out by National Highways on Broadway which will help deter speeding drivers, while also reassuring other road users of their safety.”

The A663 safety package is one of several similar projects being delivered across the region including along sections of the A66 and A590 in Cumbria, A550 in Cheshire and A585 in Lancashire.  More details of the project will be available at a dedicated webpage.
