Surrey County Council 20mph consultation closes

A consultation on plans to introduce a speed limit of 20 mph in Banstead closed on Sunday amid calls for residents to have their say before it ended.

Surrey County Council (SCC) has proposed the lower limit across 14 streets, either partially or in full, including the High Street (pictured), Colcokes Road and Garrard Road, says the BBC.

The council says 25 injury incidents have been recorded on the affected roads in the past five years, 12 involving pedestrians and six resulting in serious injuries.

It says the aim of the scheme is to create a safer environment for everyone, particularly children travelling to and from school.

The slower speeds aim to reduce the risk and severity of collisions, helping to prevent life-changing injuries and improve safety for all road users, the council said.

The scheme is expected to cost about £15,000, which will be funded by SCC and from a pot which would not be used to fund other road improvement schemes, including potholes.
