An apprentice at NY Highways’ Pickering fleet workshop has won the East Riding College’s Motor Vehicle Apprentice of the Year for the Scarborough and Bridlington region.
Jamie Keech stood out to the judging panel for his enthusiasm, professionalism, and genuine passion for learning. Since joining NY Highways, he has consistently demonstrated a maturity and capability far beyond what is typically expected of an apprentice.
Workshop managers describe Jamie as someone who sets the standard for dedication – often the first to arrive each morning – and whose positive attitude helps lift morale across the team.
Jamie’s commitment was particularly evident during the devastating moorland fires in North Yorkshire. After completing his normal shift, he voluntarily stayed late to support the large-scale emergency response, moving vehicles between depots to ensure critical resources were available where they were needed most.
Jamie’s manager Josh Dale, Workshop Controller for NY Highways’ Pickering depot, wrote the winning entry on his behalf.
“When I received the email to say I had won, I was shocked,” said Jamie. “There were so many strong candidates that I didn’t think I would be successful, so it was a lovely surprise, and I’m really pleased that all the hard work has paid off.”
Looking ahead, Jamie is committed to building his career with NY Highways.
“I’d love to work my way up the ladder in the workshop. I like to get my hands dirty, so I don’t think I’m ready for an office job!”
Jamie encourages future motor vehicle apprentices to embrace every learning opportunity.
“Be curious and ask lots of questions. Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you’re struggling. You must be a team player and open to learning new skills.”
