Cameras will be brought in to enforce a bus gate almost 90 per cent of vehicles are using illegally. A council survey looking at the bus-only route between homes in Northwestern Avenue and the Leavesden Green roundabout found only 42 out of 359 vehicles using it on the day in question were buses, says the Watford Observer.

Hertfordshire County Council has now confirmed ANPR will be installed, following formal consultation last year.

During his time as county councillor for North Watford, Asif Khan had consistently called for the scheme to be introduced.

“This has been a frustrating issue for residents and bus users for a long time,” he said. “I raised this repeatedly over several years because I have seen first-hand how cars misusing the bus lane block buses and create unnecessary congestion.”

Signage will installed this spring, with cameras coming online to issue penalties for unauthorised vehicles later in the year.
