New cycle repair stations have been installed at a number of East Riding Leisure centres to help bike riders get back on the road.
East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s road safety team has fitted the self-service cycle kits to the outside of six leisure centres across the East Riding to make it easier for residents and visitors to access bike repair equipment if it is ever needed.
The free-to-use repair stations, containing essential tools and bike pumps, are now available at East Riding Leisure sites in Bridlington, Beverley, Driffield, Haltemprice, Withernsea and Hornsea.
The project has been funded by Active Travel England which aims to encourage cycling as a convenient, sustainable and healthy mode of transport as well as supporting people choosing to travel by bike.
Councillor Paul West, the council’s cabinet member for environment and transport, said:
“We’ve fitted this equipment at easy-to-reach locations to help cyclists if they are out and about and need to make urgent repairs to their bikes. Whether people are commuting, exercising or exploring our beautiful area, these repair stations will help to ensure any minor mechanical issues don’t stop people getting out on a bike.
“It’s another way for us to promote cycling as a convenient way for everyone to get active, stay fit and travel around the East Riding in a sustainable way.”
Tim Hicks, health and wellbeing facilities manager at the council, said:
“The cycle repair stations bring a real benefit to local communities. This scheme supports and encourages people to cycle with confidence, knowing there is a safe, accessible place to stop if they need to make a quick DIY repair.
“Our East Riding Leisure sites are fully committed to supporting active travel and providing a welcoming hub for everyone who chooses to travel around the area by bike.”
