Cumberland road improvement works to start on Monday

Cumberland Council has announced that road improvement works on the C4001 Lowca, aimed at enhancing the local road network and supporting safer, smoother journeys for residents, businesses and visitors, will begin next week.

The works, which will be delivered by the council’s contractor, DSD Construction Limited, are scheduled to begin on Monday 11 May 2026 and are expected to take approximately five days, subject to weather conditions.

The scheme includes road network and drainage repairs, the installation of a new raised table to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety, upgrades to street lighting, cycle route improvements, and the reinstatement and enhancement of road markings.

To ensure the works can be completed efficiently and safely, the scheme will be delivered under official road closures. Signed diversions will be in place, where required.

Having listened to feedback from schools, parents and residents about the timing of the works during the GCSE exam period, Cumberland Council has worked with its contractor to adjust working arrangements.

Working hours will now be 9am to 6pm, allowing school buses to collect students in the morning and helping to ensure pupils can travel to their exams on time.

During afternoon drop‑off periods, school buses will still be required to use the official signed diversion, which will remain in place for the duration of the works

Cumberland Councillor Denise Rollo, Executive Member for Sustainable, Resilient and Connected Places, said:

“We’re pleased to be bringing these improvements forward on the C4001 in Lowca, which is an important route for local residents as well as people walking, wheeling and cycling along the coast.

“Health and wellbeing are at the heart of everything we do, and this scheme reflects that by making it easier and safer for people to travel actively as part of their everyday journeys. The works will help deliver smoother journeys for drivers, improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists, and strengthen links along Hadrian’s Cycleway.
