West Berkshire Council has awarded Marlborough Highways a £150 million highways maintenance deal. The Essex-based contractor beat Ringway, VolkerHighways, M Group Highways and Costain to secure the seven-year contract, which starts in October and can be extended by a further three years, reports Construction Enquirer.

West Berkshire spends more than £15 million a year on highway maintenance, covering reactive and planned works, winter maintenance and asset management, alongside a capital programme of road improvements, safety schemes and active travel projects.

The contract has an initial value of £150 million but could potentially double to £300 million if planned local government reorganisation across Berkshire and Oxfordshire expands the council’s responsibilities.

Under the deal, Marlborough Highways will deliver the council’s statutory highway authority functions and maintain roads and transport assets across the borough.

The contract is due to run from 1 October 2026 until September 2033, with an option to extend until 2036.
