A key commuter route in south Essex is due to close for three weeks to undergo essential gas works. London Road in Benfleet, locally known as Tarpots, will shut from 25 July to 15 August to allow Cadent to carry out essential gas mains replacement work, says the Basildon and Southend Echo. A 465-metre stretch will be closed from its junction with Clare Road.

A spokesperson for Cadent said: “We’re replacing the old pipes with new plastic ones which will mean that you’ll be ready for greener gas in the future. We’ll have to turn off your gas supply during some of our works and may need access to your home, but our teams on site will be on hand to let you know more information.”

A 7-mile diversion route will be available via the A13, A129, A127, and A130. Access to London Road will be maintained for emergency services and pedestrians.

A spokesperson for Castle Point Council said:

“Significant disruption and delays are very likely during this period, particularly at peak travel times. Please allow extra time for your journey and plan alternative routes.”
