A temporary traffic order is in force on the M53 in the Wirral to enable the replacement of Upton Road Bridge and associated maintenance, National Highways has said. The scheme introduces a 50mph speed limit, overnight carriageway and slip road closures, and lane width restrictions between junctions 1 ans 3, says the Liverpool Echo.

50mph limits will apply on approach sections of both carriageways between junctions one and three, including parts of the northbound and southbound mainlines near Upton Road Bridge, plus the J3 northbound entry slip and the J2 southbound entry slip.

Overnight closures will apply to: Northbound between the J3 off-slip and the J2 on-slip Southbound between the J2 off-slip and the J3 on-slip J3 northbound entry slip J3 southbound exit slip J2 southbound entry slip J2 northbound exit slip

Width limits of 1.98 metres will be in place in lane two on both carriageways in the vicinity of Upton Road Bridge. The measured extents include up to roughly 3,005 metres south to 623 metres north on the northbound side and up to 2,789 metres north to 348 metres south on the southbound side, as specified in the order.

Diversions via alternative M53 junctions and local roads will be signed when closures are in place. with restrictions and prohibitions apply only when indicated by traffic signs.

A National Highways spokesperson added:

“Disruption to the local community and road users are factors we’ve considered when deciding how to repair the bridge.

“The best solution is to replace the central span of the bridge completely. This is quicker, safer and more practical than repairing it.”
