Improvements to the A52 Gamston Roundabout near Nottingham are now complete with the junction fully opening to traffic.
The National Highways project has included widening all three approaches to the roundabout to create extra lanes in order to reduce congestion and queuing.
New traffic lights and a traffic-light controlled pedestrian crossing have been installed to improve safety, and a dedicated bus lane added on the roundabout to improve the flow of public transport.
The improvements have also extended to Nottinghamshire County Council’s maintenance depot at the roundabout, with a new traffic light-controlled system at the exit to allow safer movement of their vehicles, plus a new maintenance lay-by to improve safety for their maintenance workers.
National Highways Senior Project Manager Nick Medlicott said: “These improvements will bring real benefits to road users in terms of cutting congestion, particularly at peak times, and improving safety. We are delighted to have opened to traffic today and thank road users and local residents for their patience while we’ve been carrying out the work.”
During the next week there will be a period of adjustment to the new traffic signals with engineers modifying timings to improve traffic flow as the complex system learns the new traffic patterns for the junction.
The project, which started in January 2022 with the replacement of gas mains by Cadent Gas, has been one element of the wider A52 Nottingham Junctions Improvement.
In 2017 the Cropwell Road and Nottingham Road improvement schemes were completed at Radcliffe-on-Trent and last year upgrades were completed in the same area to the Stragglethorpe Road and Bingham Road junctions, as well as the A52/A453 Silverdale Roundabout.
In January this year it was announced the contractors for the Gamston works, Griffiths Farrans Joint Venture (GFJV) will also design and construct the remaining two junctions that form part of the scheme at Nottingham Knight and Wheatcroft, with work expected to start in September 2024.
