The Baltimore Department of Transportation has launched a new webpage for residents to check progress on its traffic signal retiming project. Since 2023, the DOT has been working on a project to retime traffic and pedestrian signals throughout the city.
The traffic signal retiming page on the DOT’s website provides information on 1,380 traffic signals, including pedestrian signals, being retimed in Baltimore. The site includes a timeline of the effort, which areas are being worked on and the goal of the project, says the Baltimore Sun.
Users can filter by district and by remotely managed signals to see which have already been retimed and which ones are still in the works.
The retiming project is expected to finish in February. According to the schedule listed on the website, work on signals in South, Central and East Baltimore has been completed. Signals in North Baltimore are being retimed, with West Baltimore up next.
Retiming is meant to improve traffic safety by adjusting for population growth, new bus lanes, mobility lanes and pedestrian safety, according to the DOT. With the retiming, speeding and delays are expected to decrease.
