Bath & NE Somerset Council supports road safety day at primary school

Bath & North East Somerset Council has supported a day of road safety learning and activities at Freshford Church Primary School.

Freshford School, the council and VolkerHighways teamed up to deliver road safety assemblies, activities and an outdoor play session in the afternoon.

The council provided educational resources, lessons and activities to the school for pupils to complete in their classes leading up to the event. This included learning about the green cross code and how to spot potential hazards when close to roads.

Two assemblies were given to pupils in the morning by Bath & North East Somerset Council and its highways contractor, VolkerHighways, which focused on road safety issues experienced at the school, specifically unsafe and inconsiderate parking and driving on roads close to the school and featured a special appearance from Kerby the road safety cone.

A temporary road closure was put in place at Freshford Lane, directly outside the school, between 2-4pm to allow a playing out session for all the pupils. This provided a safe space for children to play and shows pupils and parents the benefits of quieter roads close to schools and encourage more active travel from school.

Councillor Manda Rigby, Cabinet Member for Transport said: “I’d like to thank Freshford Church Primary for having us, it was great to work together to deliver these really important lessons and messages to the children.

“Road safety initiatives like this are so important to help keep our communities safe.”

Talia Kelly, a Governor at Freshford Church Primary School, said: “Parents, residents, staff and children have been able to enjoy a much more sociable end to the school day with many families choosing active travel methods to return home.

“This all helps to lay down foundations for future independence, health and wellbeing. The children have really relished the freedom to play and explore in this way.”
