A 10-year transport plan for getting around a cleaner, fairer and growing city will be discussed by Brighton & Hove councillors this week.
Cabinet members will be presented with a report on Thursday 11 December that will recommend adopting Our City Transport Plan 2035 as Brighton & Hove’s overarching transport policy for the next decade.
The plan sets out a long-term vision for the city’s transport network and a series of projects to deliver it.
The plan sets out 5 key challenges the city faces:
- Enabling more people to live safer, healthier and more active lives
- Reducing congestion on our roads
- Supporting the transition to zero and ultra-low emission transport
- Creating a transport network that is more inclusive
- Maintaining our roads and managing them as efficiently as possible
And six objectives on how to address them and deliver the plan’s vision:
- Increase public transport use
- Enable the uptake and use of zero and ultra-low emission transport
- Deliver a safe, inclusive and integrated transport system
- Create a well-maintained streets, pavements and rights of way
- Provide active travel choices for all and excellent public spaces
- Promote and use technology to reduce and manage travel
A draft version of Our City Transport Plan 2035 received more than 500 responses during a public consultation which also included public drop-in sessions, a week-long public exhibition and workshops and meetings with stakeholders, including a dedicated session for disabled people.
The consultation revealed strongest support for delivering well maintained streets, excellent public transport and quality public spaces.
Those responding also felt subsidising public transport to make it more affordable and improving priority routes for walking, wheeling and cycling were top priorities.
Our City Transport Plan 2035 also includes details of a short-term delivery plan for meeting the objectives.
It includes the ongoing work we’re doing to install more electric vehicle charge points, subsidise bus fares, maintain and improve our roads and pavements, provide safer streets for residents and schools and deliver schemes such as Valley Gardens and active travel improvements on the A259.
It also includes plans for delivering a purpose-built Park & Ride scheme to build on our summer trial, improve the look and feel of the city and an ambition to deliver a Sussex Coast Mass Rapid Transit system.

“Building on the work we’re already doing, we’ll use the plan to guide everything from expanding our electric vehicle infrastructure, reducing carbon emissions, excellent public transport and accessible active travel for walking, wheeling and cycling to improving the look and feel of our roads and pavements and delivering better, safer streets.
“The way we move around the city will play a key role in the continued growth and success of Brighton & Hove. A long-term plan, smart investment and innovation will mean better travel and transport for everyone.”
