Caernarfonshire: A5 collapse causes closure and diversions

Work is continuing on repairing a major North Wales road after it partially collapsed on Wednesday. On Tuesday afternoon Traffic Wales announced the closure of the A5, between Betws-y-Coed and Pentrefoelas, saying this was due to emergency works on the route and asked drivers to “avoid the area”. There were reports the road had collapsed.

The road has since reopened but repair work to the collapsed section is continuing. Despite fears of major delays and diversions, Traffic Wales subsequently announced: “We are pleased to report that the road has now been reopened under two way traffic lights. The diversion route is in the process of being removed. Works will continue tomorrow but no further road closures will be required.”

This news will be welcomed by drivers as a second road closure will start in the Conwy Valley from this evening. Dwr Cymru is having to deal with another burst pipe next to the A470 near Dolgarrog train station at Maenan.
