Cambridge bus drivers have a “coffee with a cop”

Cambridge bus drivers have taken the opportunity to get to know a key member of the team enforcing law and order in the city centre.

Drivers for Stagecoach East met PC Jake Weldon (pictured) for a “coffee with a cop” session at their base in Drummer Street Bus Station.

The drop-in session was an opportunity for bus drivers to have their questions answered by an expert on neighbourhood policing and anti-social behaviour in Cambridge. They were also able to learn how the crime reports they lodge with the Police are collated and used.

Martin Marsh, Operations Manager at Stagecoach East in Cambridge, said: “At Stagecoach, we believe in doing the right thing – and one very important part of that mission is to ensure that both our customers and our colleagues are safe and comfortable throughout their journey. So, these sessions are invaluable because both sides can learn from each other.

“Our goal is to foster a great relationship between Cambridgeshire Police and Stagecoach in Cambridge, and this is just the first of many sessions we hope to organise.

“It was good to see that our drivers really took the opportunity to discuss issues such as anti-social behaviour, parking in and around the city, and how we can support the Police and how the Police can support us. I will certainly be keeping in touch with Jake and the relevant members of our local Police, and I look forward to doing ever more to help our Drivers and customers.”

PC Weldon added: “It was good to talk with the drivers from Stagecoach East, it helped to understand the issues they face so we can provide advice and support around crime prevention.

“By strengthening our relationship with Stagecoach East and other local businesses, we, along with partner agencies, can together strengthen our approach in tackling anti-social behaviour.

“We also urge the public to continue to report incidents to us, either online or via 101. Information is vital so we can identify trends and issues and prioritise our work accordingly.”
