£9 million is set to be invested in making Croydon a better-connected borough with more transport links. The council has revealed its plans to utilise this money over the next two years to boost the borough’s connectivity, enhance growth, and improve opportunities for all, says the Croydon Guardian. The plans span various areas, aiming to support the Croydon Growth Plan 2025 and Town Centre Vision.
The investment will focus on better bus journeys, safer streets, and new pedestrian and cycle routes connecting Croydon’s green spaces.
The plans will be in line with Executive Mayor of Croydon Jason Perry’s priorities of a cleaner, safer Croydon and restoring pride.
The council’s cabinet has approved proposals for Croydon’s submission to Transport for London (TfL) for slightly more than £6.9 million to be invested in improved travel over the next two financial years.
These plans form Croydon’s Local Implementation Plan (LIP), which every London borough must submit to outline how they intend to deliver the Mayor of London’s Transport Strategy.
Additionally, the cabinet has consented to spend more than £2.1 million of section 106 money – funds from developers used to reduce transport impacts of new developments on local communities – on boosting the borough’s transport.
Croydon’s blueprint for a better borough incorporates improved pedestrian and cycle links through, and between, parks. Specifically, planned routes are through Lloyd Park and Addington Park, between Lloyd Park and South Norwood Country Park, and between Mitcham Common and Wandle Park.
A specific sum of £3,410,000 will be dedicated to the reduction of traffic speeds and volumes, as well as promoting active travel by walking and cycling.
A budget of £650,000 has been set aside for improving road safety in Portland Road, South Norwood and £1,705,000 will be earmarked to establish and enhance bus lanes and make bus stops more accessible.
