DfT advertises Chief Scientific Adviser vacancy

Applications for the role of Chief Scientific Adviser at the Department for Transport are now open.

The Chief Scientific Adviser (CSA) is a senior and influential leader at the heart of the Department for Transport (DfT), responsible for ensuring that science, engineering, technology, and innovation are embedded in the department’s policies, operations, and strategic direction. As a Director in the Senior Civil Service (SCS Pay Band 2), the CSA plays a critical role in shaping how transport supports the UK’s wider government priorities—from economic growth and national security to decarbonisation and innovation.

This is a unique opportunity to lead the department’s scientific agenda, influence national policy, and connect government with world-leading research and innovation. The CSA works closely with Ministers, the Permanent Secretary, and senior leaders across DfT and beyond, ensuring that robust, people-centred, and forward-looking science underpins decision-making at every level.

“I cannot recommend this role highly enough, says current incumbent and soon to be departing Prof Sarah Sharples. “It provides the opportunity to work on a diverse range of topics, from future fuels to AI and autonomy to futures and emerging technologies to innovation to Integrated Transport and social and behavioural science. The DfT CSA leads a team of specialists and is head of the Government Science and Engineering profession within DfT. And you also become part of the incredible network of government Chief Scientific Advisers – a fantastically collegiate group of extraordinary people led by the Government Chief Scientific Adviser.

“The role is ideal for someone who is keen to lead work across a range of different elements of science and engineering, and works closely with others within DfT on many different activities, including coordination and assurance of the DfT R&D portfolio.”

Application deadline is 5 September and you can apply HERE.
