A lorry driver has been jailed for ten months for causing death by dangerous driving in a crash on an all-lane running section of the M1 near Sheffield.
Prezemyslaw Szuba crashed into two vehicles who were swapping insurance details after a collision – Alexandru Murgeanu and Jason Mercer were killed.
However the BBC quotes Mr Mercer’s widow Claire as saying, “the wrong person has been jailed,” believing it wasn’t M Szuba’s fault but those who installed the motorway.
A Highways England spokesperson told the BBC, “We are deeply saddened by the deaths of Jason Mercer and Alexandru Murgeanu and extend our sympathies to both their families and friends.
“We appreciate that this continues to be an unimaginably difficult time for them and understand the strength of feeling around this case.
“Every road death is a needless loss of life and we must do all that we can to keep our roads safe.”
