Transport for London (TfL) has confirmed that the Gallows Corner flyover and roundabout are on track to fully reopen to traffic by the end of September following the completion of major water infrastructure work by Essex & Suffolk Water (ESW).
The renewal of the ageing Gallows Corner flyover in Romford is essential to ensuring the safety and reliability of the road network in Havering and across east London. The flyover was built in the 1970s as a temporary structure and has undergone major strengthening and refurbishment works to ensure it can continue serving Londoners for generations to come.
ESW has now completed the complex work to divert and replace a strategic water main and multiple distribution mains beneath the junction and has handed the site back to TfL. This follows the completion of final testing, cleaning and commissioning of the new water main.
TfL and its contractor, Costain, will now carry out final reinstatement and resurfacing works in the areas where ESW’s work has taken place. This final phase includes a full weekend closure and two overnight closures and is expected to ensure the full reopening of the flyover and roundabout to general traffic by the end of September, with all remaining traffic management and diversion routes removed. Once the scheme is complete, larger vehicles will be able to use the flyover, allowing previous speed and weight restrictions to be removed.

“We look forward to seeing the flyover opening at the end of the month. We’d like to apologise to local residents, businesses and road users for the delays to these works and thank them for their patience while this essential project has been carried out.
“Essex & Suffolk Water has now completed its works and handed the site back to us, allowing us to move into the final phase of the project. We’re working closely with our contractor, Costain, to complete the remaining resurfacing and reinstatement work as quickly and safely as possible.”
