The reopening of Gallows Corner flyover and roundabout in Romford has been delayed yet again, this time due to what has been described as a ‘significant’ pipe issue.
Gallows Corner, the junction that connects the A12 and the A127, was initially closed in June 2025. It was expected to open on 1 September 2025 before the initial delays were announced, and until this latest announcement it was set to open this week. Despite this further push-back Transport for London (TfL) has assured that the project will eventually enhance journey time reliability for the thousands who travel through the area daily. However, a new, revised opening date has yet to be announced
Essex & Suffolk Water told Essex Live that its teams are working ‘around the clock’ to get the ‘complex’ repair completed as quickly as possible. TFL are exploring whether a ‘partial’ reopening could be feasible while the works take place.
Blair Mitchell, Essex & Suffolk Water’s Asset Management Director, said:
“During the final stages of testing on the water main at Gallows Corner we identified a significant issue on one of the pipes. Our teams are currently underway with a very complex repair and will be working around the clock to get this completed as quickly as we can to allow TfL to get the road open as soon as possible. We are extremely sorry for the continued disruption this causes and understand the frustration and inconvenience it has created for local people.”
Scott Haxton, TfL’s Director of Capital Delivery, said:
“All significant TfL works at Gallows Corner have now been completed and Essex and Suffolk Water (ESW) has also made progress with its complex and challenging work. During testing ESW identified further work needed to ensure the water main is fully assured.”
“We are working together with ESW to ensure this vital work can be done at pace and we are exploring whether a partial reopening may be possible in the meantime. We are very sorry for the further disruption this will caused to local residents and businesses, and we remain committed with ESW to confirm an opening date as soon as possible.”
