Littleborough ‘has tolerated traffic chaos for far too long’, according to Rochdale’s MP. Paul Waugh claims utility companies have failed to properly coordinate roadworks, leading to lengthy traffic jams, says the Manchester Evening News.
After temporary traffic lights were installed in Hurstead, Littleborough and Hollingworth Lake, residents faced long delays and tailbacks last week. Roadworks conducted by Openreach and Electricity North West compounded matters, causing yet more disruption in an area already facing heavy congestion./
Mr Waugh said he intends to writing to utility firms asking them coordinate over roadworks to avoid traffic flares. He stressed new government laws should make it easier to fine companies that cause unnecessary delays.
The Rochdale MP said:
“As a driver myself, I totally share the frustration and anger of many motorists in Littleborough for whom roadworks feel like a highway to hell.
“Many people will tolerate a bit of a delay if there are emergency works needed but this is beyond a joke now for many. Parents and kids are late for school and work, older folk are missing hospital and GP appointments, businesses just can’t function when these roadworks are out of control.
“Littleborough has tolerated chaos on its main road for far too long. After decades of excuses, the work is finally beginning.”
