With the idea of a Graduated Driving Licence gaining traction in the UK, several hundred road safety professionals, policy makers, transport researchers and other people interested in road safety and driver education have signed up to a TRL-hosted a webinar this week to detail how a similar idea in Australia could be used to plan its introduction here.
Currently, when a new driver passes their test, they can drive immediately like any other driver – travel on motorways, carrying multiple passengers and drive at any time of the day or night. A Graduated Driving License would mean that young, novice drivers are restricted in what they can do, giving the time and space they need to become safe and competent drivers before they face high-risk situations.
The TRL webinar this Friday (6 September) will explore the successes and lessons learned from Australia’s Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) programme, providing insights into how and why the UK can implement similar strategies to improve road safety and driver education.
It will hear from the following world leading experts: Professor Rebecca Ivers AM FAHMS FRSN, Head of Scientia Professor and Head of School, School of Population Health, UNSW Sydney, Dr Shaun Helman, Chief Scientist, TRL and Dr Ian Greenwood, Campaigner to stop road death.
