The UK’s Intelligent Transport Society is reminding people of the huge value that technology gives to travel in the country by focussing on the ways automated enforcement solutions improve road safety, air quality, journey reliability and efficiency.
The summary document is the first of a series by ITS (UK) to underline how technology has made transport across the country safer, greener and more efficient in a myriad of ways.
The document on enforcement technology details how the installation of technology has led to the number of people being killed or seriously injured on dangerous stretches of road being reduced by up to 88%. It explains how average speed camera systems have also helped air quality being significantly improved, bringing emissions below EU limits, and how the solution has also ensured that a bridge in Suffolk can stay open more often when strong winds are forecast.
ITS (UK) also highlights the back office solutions that its members have created, which allow police forces to use much less staffing than otherwise would be needed to process penalties for people caught speeding. This has meant the effectiveness of the overall solution is improved.
ITS (UK) says this is a “living document” which will be updated as more examples are given. As well as having the document itself, key case studies and articles are also listed on its website.
“This ITS (UK) initiative is a great way for its members to really show off the value of their products,” commented ITS (UK) Enforcement Forum Chair Geoff Collins of Jenoptik. “We often get criticised for being purely there as a revenue raiser as part of the “war on motorists” but this document explains simply and concisely just how wrong that perception is.”
Jennie Martin, ITS (UK) Secretary General added, “We in the industry know how important and effective our solutions are, but we sometimes fail to tell or remind the travelling public of that value. This series of summaries and case studies will make it clear that without the amazing work the ITS industry has done, and continues to do, our journeys would be more dangerous, take longer and pollute more. I am proud we can offer these documents in an accessible way for people to find out more about what we do and why.”
The document is release during the week of the latest ITS (UK) Enforcement Forum webinar which you can watch here.
