Ken Skates urged to visit Chepstow over traffic fears

The Welsh Government cabinet secretary for transport and north Wales, Ken Skates, has been urged to visit Chepstow to discuss traffic concerns.

The call came from Peter Fox, the Member of the Senedd for Monmouth, who is worried about the potential impact of the HGV weight restriction on the M48 Severn Bridge.

He believes this could lead to vehicles using Chepstow as a route to access England, either via the Forest of Dean or Monmouth, says the South Wales Argus.

Mr Fox wants the Welsh Government to take action to protect Chepstow, which is already suffering from severe congestion, from further traffic issues.

He also asked the cabinet secretary to arrange a visit to the area as soon as possible.

Mr Fox, who is shadow cabinet secretary for infrastructure, transport and rural affairs, said: “We are all aware of the upcoming restrictions on the M48 Severn Bridge, and it has been made clear these works are absolutely essential.

“Whilst frustrating for a lot of people, from my conversations with businesses and others, they understand the need for these works to protect the long-term future of the bridge.”

He said that Chepstow must be protected from further traffic problems by the Welsh Government and called for correct signposting for HGVs and other impacted vehicles which will take them away from the ‘already heavily congested areas of Monmouthshire.’

“I have asked the cabinet secretary to come and visit the area sooner rather than later, to ensure that Chepstow is not impacted unnecessarily by these works,” he added. “I look forward to hopefully welcoming him to Monmouthshire soon.”
