A Derbyshire MP has launched a campaign calling for improved safety measures on the A632, following continued concerns over speeding and serious collisions on the route.

Louise Sandher-Jones, Labour MP for North East Derbyshire, has launched Make The A632 Safe, urging residents to share their experiences of the road and press for further action, reports the Derbyshire Times.

The campaign focuses on the section of the A632 known locally as the ‘Flying Mile’, between Matlock and Nottinghamshire. The route has been the scene of numerous serious incidents, with 20 people killed and a further 231 seriously injured over the past 25 years.

Speeding and dangerous driving have been longstanding concerns, with calls for measures including speed cameras to be introduced.

Derbyshire County Council has previously installed a police lay-by on the A632, but the MP says further intervention is needed to address ongoing safety concerns.

After hearing concerns from residents and families affected by collisions, Sandher-Jones has raised the issue with Derbyshire County Council and ministers at the Department for Transport.

Her new campaign is calling on local people to contact Cllr Parkin and share their personal experiences of the route, with the aim of demonstrating the strength of local feeling and encouraging the council to introduce additional safety measures.

Ms Sandher-Jones said:

“Everyone deserves to feel safe when travelling to work, returning home, or visiting family and friends. No family should have to receive a knock on the door telling them that a loved one is not coming home.

“I have repeatedly raised concerns about the A632 with Derbyshire County Council and the Department for Transport. While I welcomed the introduction of a police lay-by last year, it is clear that this measure alone is not enough.

“Since then, further collisions have occurred, highlighting that more must be done. “Families of those impacted and local residents have rightly raised this time and time again. It is important that we stand with them and do what we can to make this road safer.

“The message from local people is loud and clear: enough is enough. Residents want meaningful action to slow traffic and prevent further tragedies, including measures such as speed cameras, rumble strips, and other proven road safety interventions.”
