Derbyshire: Speed cameras to enforce temporary A38 speed limit as two-year works confirmed

A section of the A38 in Derbyshire will have a camera-monitored temporary speed limit when a two-year project begins later this year.

National Highways has confirmed that it will be working on the A5132 Carriers Road bridge that runs over the A38 at Eggington from August, in which a 50mph temporary speed limit will be introduced on the A38 itself, says the Derby Telegraph.

Work will begin in “mid-August” and will last around 20 months, and will be completed in phases, on both the A5132 bridge, and on the A38 dual-carriageway.

The A38 will remain open during the day in both directions throughout the works, however there will be “some overnight closures” which will be shared nearer the time, but, in order to “create a safe working area” lanes will be narrowed on the A38, meaning a 50mph will be introduced, set to be monitored by speed cameras.

National Highways also says it will close one lane in each direction towards the end of the scheme, allowing crews to work in the middle of the A38. A signed diversion route will also be in operation, and it is likely to cause disruption to those in the Eggington/Willington area who use the A38.

A spokesperson for National Highways said:

“Our surveys identified work that needed to be done to re-route and replace a gas line that runs through the structure.
