Kapsch TrafficCom awarded Melbourne tolling system upgrade

Kapsch TrafficCom has been selected by ConnectEast to deliver a major upgrade of the Multi-lane Free Flow (MLFF) roadside tolling system on the EastLink tollway in Melbourne, Australia.

The MLFF tolling system upgrade project is a significant multi-year financial investment, scheduled for completion in mid 2028. This upgrade reinforces Kapsch TrafficCom’s role as the long-standing tolling
technology provider for EastLink – one of Australia’s longest toll roads.

Commenting on the project, Daniel Vazquez, EVP APAC at Kapsch TrafficCom, says:

“The 39-kilometre EastLink tollway is a vital mobility connector for Melbourne, connecting the Eastern, Monash, Frankston and Peninsula Link Freeways. By upgrading the existing tolling system with our latest Kapsch TrafficCom technology, we are helping ConnectEast ensure that EastLink continues to operate with high accuracy, reliability and performance for many years to come. We are proud that this partnership, which commenced when EastLink opened in 2008, will continue to flourish.”

Charles Griplas, Managing Director of ConnectEast, said:

“Working with Kapsch TrafficCom allows us to modernise the roadside tolling system while maintaining continuity for our operations teams and customers. The upgrade will ensure EastLink continues to operate to high standards of safety, efficiency and customer experience into the future.”

Under the contract, Kapsch TrafficCom will design, supply, install and commission an upgraded tolling
system for the EastLink tollway. The current roadside tolling architecture, built during EastLink’s
construction in 2005 – 2008, relies on older generation roadside equipment (RSE) with each toll point
having a two-gantry arrangement, and with physical controllers housed in nearby technical shelters.
