Road users in Cambridgeshire are set for safer and smoother journeys as National Highways begins work next week on a multi-million-pound road surface upgrade to the A11 near Sawston.
The £12-millon project will see an 11-mile stretch of the A11 between Babraham and Six Mile Bottom resurfaced. An upgraded central safety barrier and new signs will also be installed as part of the year-long improvement programme.
Work is due to get underway on Monday evening (6th March) at 8pm when the southbound carriageway will be closed overnight between Worsted Lodge to Fourwentways, reopening at 6am on the following morning. The closures on this section will remain in place each weeknight between 8pm – 6am until Tuesday 2nd May.
Work will take place on weeknights only to minimise disruption.
The remaining work will be split into four further phases covering different sections of the A11 and is expected to be completed by the end of February next year. Further details on these are listed below.
National Highways are currently investing millions of pounds upgrading the A11 and other roads in the East of England that are coming to the end of their expected life.
Many of these roads are getting close to the big 40 in terms of their age and are being resurfaced to help make them both safer and smoother. Surveys have shown this section of the A11 is in need of long-term repair.
The new road surface should last for around 20 years and require minimum maintenance.
Jordan Rayner, National Highways Project Manager for the work, said: “This maintenance and resurfacing is essential and will futureproof this part of the A11 for years to come. That means less disruption for those regularly using the road.
“We are carrying work out on weeknights only to minimise the impact to local residents and businesses, but I would still advise road users to check the diversion route and please allow extra time for your journey.”
National Highways are holding to public events where people can find out more about the improvements to the A11 and put any questions they may have to staff working on the project.
