National Highways’ James Corden named IED Rising Star of the Year

James Corden, Economic Development Planning Manager at National Highways, is the winner of the IED’s Rising Star of the Year award.

The award, sponsored by AtkinsRéalis, recognises younger economic development team members aged 30 or under who have demonstrated excellence, commitment and gone above and beyond in their early career. It was presented at the IED Annual Awards 2024, which were hosted in London on 6th November following the Institute’s Annual Conference Economic Transition – How do we deliver long-lasting change in our towns, cities and regions?’.

James’ nomination outlined the pivotal role he is playing in developing and embedding the economic development agenda in a national transport body, culminating in the publication of the National Highways Economic Overview. James is also a committed member of the IED’s Early Career Network and graduate mentor.

On receiving the award, James said: “I am truly honoured to receive the Rising Star of the Year award from the IED. This year, I’ve had the chance to lead some fantastic projects fundamental to helping National Highways in its role to deliver and support economic growth. I look forward to continuing my journey with the IED and my role within the Early Career Network.”

IED Director Bev Hurley CBE, who hosted the IED Annual Awards 2024, said: “Many congratulations to James as the winner of our Rising Star of the Year award. Our judges highlighted James’ proactive approach in understanding and communicating policy priorities within National Highways, which plays a vital role in the UK’s economic future. They commended his use of data analysis, relationship-building skills, and local knowledge as significant assets.

“James is recognised for his efforts to integrate economic development into National Highways and for fostering connections between national and local bodies. His work, particularly the launch of the National Highways Economic Overview at Traffex 2024, is seen as a testament to his commitment and drive in this area.”
