National Highways launches new Red X campaign

Drivers are being urged to follow safe driving rules on smart motorways in a new campaign from National Highways.

The “Don’t Ignore The Red X” campaign is trying to boost understanding of driving on the motorways without a hard shoulder.

“Would you know what to do when you see a red X?” it asks, “Move out of the closed lane way in advance, follow other signs, such as variable speed limit signs and wait for the lane to reopen as you drive along. Don’t ignore a red X.”

Its campaign explains, “The red X sign is key to supporting safety on motorways. It tells you a lane is closed, either to protect drivers in difficulty, or when road workers and emergency services need a space to work.

“Most drivers respect the red X signal. But those who don’t put themselves and other road users at real risk.”

All the details in the campaign are here.
