The number of drivers caught by speed cameras in Scotland is at a four-year high, adding millions to government coffers. Police Scotland figures obtained by the Daily Record show 32,405 motorists were snared in 2022, 33,462 in 2023. 51,021 last year and 51,169 up to 18 October this year.
The overall number of speed camera “activations” in the last four years – 168,057 – is the equivalent of fines totalling almost £17million. However police have refused to disclose which cameras trapped the most speeders.
In a freedom of information response, they said drivers would be able to avoid detection – thus putting the public at risk – if they knew which ones posed the most risk. But we can reveal one unnamed site has snared 5289 drivers this year – 18 a day and potential fine revenue of more than £500,000.
The worst offenders were found in Glasgow and Edinburgh. Cameras were triggered 20,681 times in Glasgow by motorists compared with 16,214 in 2024. In the capital, there have been 10,665 “activations” this year compared with 10,640 last year.
