A Police Inspector in West Yorkshire has told how the introduction of average speed cameras on a road in his area has led to a “marked change” on the behaviour of local drivers.
Keighley Inspector John Barker, of the constituency’s Neighbourhood Policing Team, told the Telegraph and Argus newspaper about Jenoptik cameras installed on the Bingley Bypass last year.
The report says that at a meeting last week he told councillors that he hoped that similar cameras would be installed on other stretches of road in the district.
Insp Barker is quoted as telling the meeting: “The presence of a speed camera van often works better to change driver behaviour than a day or activity or operation.
“If you see a police camera van on a road you will think twice about speeding on there.
“The average speed camera on the Bingley Bypass has had a marked change on driver behaviour.
“I’d like to see it rolled out further, towards the Steeton and Silsden Bypass (Aire Valley Trunk Road).”
