The question of what happens when an autonomous vehicle commits a driving offence has long-been in the thoughts of industry professionals. Last week police in the US were forced to find an answer as a video uploaded to TikTok appears to show a Waymo vehicle in California being pulled over after making a wrong turn in front of them.
However, there were no human beings in the vehicle at the time of the incident, so it is not clear what the officers could do to address the situation, says AS.
As one TikTok user asked in the comments: “What even happens in this situation? Who does the cop talk to and how? Do they just write a ticket and send it to Google?”
After being founded in 20098 Waymo, was founded in 2009 were finally able to go fully driverless in 2020 and have been gradually rolling out the service since then. As of April 2025 the company reports that it takes more than 250,000 paid rides per week.
Waymo’s CEOs have already managed to raise $5.5 billion and $5.6 billion in two separate rounds of funding in recent years.
