Detailed video surveys (like the one featured below) conducted on roads in the UK could help highway and transport planners to speedily re-allocate their road space for cyclists and pedestrians.
This fence-to-fence roadscape data provides invaluable information for makinge the necessary changes to the network to accommodate the latest modifications required to encourage more cycling and walking.
Highway technology company Gaist has surveyed the entire classified network in the UK as part of its on-going work with highway authorities to help them gain a detailed understanding of the condition of their network to assist with both reactive and planned highway maintenance works as well as build a case for further investment.
As a result, the company has millions of images and videos of the UK network including cities and towns that can be used to help plan new markings, cycle and walking routes as well as give an accurate understanding of the condition of that road before works are planned and delivered.
“We have some really useful information to help local authorities through what will be a comprehensive review of the road network that will result in many changes being made to help encourage more walking and cycling following the recent government announcement. We think our detailed and accurate images and videos, as well as experience in understanding road condition, will help councils save a lot of time in the planning phase of this important work,” says Steve Birdsall, Chief Executive and founder of Gaist.
The offers comes after the Government launched a £2 billion campaign to put walking and cycling at the centre of a huge change to the way people travel to reveal pressure on public transport.
Pop-up bike lanes with protected space for cycling, wider pavements, safer junctions, and cycle and bus-only corridors will be created in England within weeks as part of a £250 million emergency active travel fund – the first stage of a £2 billion investment, as part of the £5 billion in new funding announced for cycling and buses in February.
The government will fund and work with local authorities across the country to help make it easier for people to use bikes to get around – including Greater Manchester, which wants to create 150 miles of protected cycle track, and Transport for London, which plans a ‘bike Tube’network above Underground lines. An updated Cycling and Walking Investment Strategy will also be launched in the summer, with further measures to transform cycling and walking to deliver the Government’s aims to double cycling and increase walking by 2025.
