Almost 800 streets across the south and east of Glasgow are set to benefit from safer 20 mph speed limits, with new signage due to be installed from next month. The works will mark the completion of Phase 1 of Glasgow’s citywide 20mph rollout, following the introduction of new limits in Govan earlier this year.

The programme also forms part of a wider, national move towards lower speed limits in built-up areas.

Across the wards of Southside Central, Calton, East Centre and Shettleston, the new speed limits will focus on residential streets, routes to schools and other roads used every day by local communities.

A small number of streets in neighbouring Haghill, Ruchazie and Strathbungo will also be included at this time to support a practical and consistent rollout.

In total, 797 streets and street sections in these areas will join Glasgow’s growing 20 mph network, helping to create safer neighbourhoods and reduce the likelihood and severity of road traffic collisions.

Cabinet Secretary for Transport Stephen Flynn said: 

“We all want our local streets to be as safe as possible and the £41 million that the Scottish Government is investing in road safety shows just how important that aim is to us all.  

“Reducing speeds in busy streets is a big part of the work we are doing to lower the likelihood of serious incidents, whilst also having the benefit of making local areas a better place to live and work.

“It’s important that we support Glasgow City Council in their local plans and the £2.5 million of Scottish Government funding will do just that.”
