Shapps mooting a Wales-Ireland tunnel

The Transport Secretary Grant Shapps is suggesting the government might build a tunnel between Wales and Ireland, as an alternative to a plan to build a link to Scotland.

Nation.Cymru reports that he’s told the Financial Times that it might better connect Britain with Northern Ireland and that he said that the original idea of a tunnel between Northern Ireland and Scotland was still under consideration, “I don’t know whether it should be there or to Wales.”

The report adds that a Whitehall official told The Times that “People think this is all a joke but it’s much more likely to get the go-ahead than people think”.
